The IZEW is an internationally oriented and interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Tübingen that explores ethical problems arising from the sciences and humanities. The IZEW was founded in 1990 based on a decision of the parliament of the German federal state Baden-Württemberg. Currently it is supported by ten faculties. We aim at research in cooperation between scholars of different disciplines and the advancement of the next generation of researchers in the field of ethics in the sciences and humanities. Another focal point is the transfer of results of research to the area of education, and the coordination of regional, national and international networks on ethical topics. The IZEW maintains an extensive library with a documentation centre.
Since 2001 Prof. Dr. Eve-Marie Engels is director of the IZEW.
Since December 2009 the IZEW, called „Interdepartmental Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities“ so far, has been renamed as „International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities“ according to its increasing international focus.
